Georgia K. Lerner, yet another of the amazing women featured in our Power Women issue, is the executive director of the Women’s Prison Association (WPA). The WPA is the oldest advocacy group for women in the United States, and Georgia has dedicated her life to furthering the goals of this almost two centuries old organization. Not only does the WPA work to aid recently incarcerated women make a transition back to their communities, but they also aid the families of these women with reunification and mentoring through the WomenCare initiative. In recent years they have also developed several programs to help HIV-positive women cope with the specific challenges they face. Through the efforts of Georgia K. Lerner and the WPA, the welfare of women during and following involvement with the criminal justice system is being looked after. These women, whose lives involve complications that are difficult to imagine, have found a friend and faithful advocate in Ms. Lerner.
